2010 BIAC Hawaiian Oyster Odyssey
The Brain Injury Association of Canada cranked up the heat in January by hosting Toronto’s 6th Annual Hawaiian Oyster Odyssey (HOO). With over 120 people in attendance, the beach-themed event packed The Miller Tavern which is located at 3885 Yonge Street. This year’s event raised over $120,000 and so far over $720,000 has been raised since the first HOO in 2005. The annual Hawaiian Oyster Odyssey event will also raise funds to advocate for survivors. This year’s Master of Ceremonies was Beverley Thompson, host of CTV’s Canada AM. Attending the event were both the Minister of Health and the Minister of Transport to help promote the BIAC and help spread the word about prevention. The event featured tropical decor, oyster bars, tropical cocktails, a silent auction and stories from survivors. The speeches from the podium were filled with hope, bravery and success stories. One such story came from survivor, Gary Otsu who had the audience captivated by his ongoing journey. Dr. Charles Tator, renowned Toronto neurosurgeon, also spoke at the Toronto HOO. Sponsors for the event included the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), TD Bank Financial Group, and We Care. The mission of the Brain Injury Society of Toronto is to enhance the quality of life for persons, in the City of Toronto, who are living with the effects of acquired brain injury, through education, awareness, support and advocacy. www.biac-aclc.ca
